Marvelous Multi-Tasking

Do you ever find yourself wishing you could clone yourself to get things done? Most of us have more to do than we have time or energy to do. Since cloning is still the stuff of science fiction, at least for humans, let's take a look at ways we can actually do more than one thing at a time. It is possible to multi-task and get more done than we think. AND do it well.

1. Clean While Cooking.

While you are preparing meals, it is possible to clean at the same time, believe it or not. Simply fill up your sink with hot soapy water before you start prepping food. As you finish with a dish or utensil, put it into the hot soapy water to soak while you cook. Then, while items are in the oven, you can quickly wipe with a sponge or dishcloth, rinse and air dry. Use the soapy water to soak cooking pots and dishes while you eat. Easy breezy cleanup.

2. Let The Cleaning Products Do The Work.

Have you ever watched the housekeeping staff in a hotel? They come in, spray cleaner in the tub and sink, clean the toilet bowl and spray the outside of the toilet. THEN they go change sheets on the bed BEFORE they wipe or rinse a thing in the bathroom! While they are taking care of the bed the cleaning products are cleaning the bathroom. After the bed is finished and the room is vacuumed, they collect the dirty linens and wipe down the bathroom. Once they hang up clean towels, the room is done, with half the work!

3. Wash And Work.

Start a load of wash to be washing while you are busy with something else. There is no need to babysit the washer so load it, start it, and go tackle another 35-40 minute chore. When you are finished, it should be time to toss the wet clothes into the dryer and start another load going. Then, off to tackle another chore or two.

4. Make Driving Time Productive.

We certainly aren't advocating trying to read a physical book while driving. However, you can get books on tape (or CD) to play in the car while driving. You can check out all kinds of books on tape at your local library.

Along the same line, if you use an MPD player at home, you can also listen to books while you are doing other things at home.

5. Waiting, Waiting, Waiting.

It seems like no matter where we have an appointment, it means waiting. Rather than thumb through magazines that are months out of date, why not do some of your home bookkeeping. You can reconcile your checkbook, read a bit of a book, tweak your budget and so on. There are many things we can do to redeem the time we spend waiting to get in to see the doctor or dentist or eye doctor.

6. Talking On The Phone.

Sometimes it can feel like we spend a huge amount of time on the telephone. While talking on the phone, we an wipe down counters, clean out a kitchen drawer, empty wastebaskets, or clear off a tabletop. I'm sure you can think of other things you can do while on the telephone that don't require a lot of concentration. You can talk on the phone and accomplish something at the same time.

7. Freshen Carpets While You Dust.

Before you start dusting, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your carpets. Go ahead and get all of your dusting done, and then vacuum. The baking soda works while you dust to neutralize odors trapped in your carpets. After you vacuum, the odor and baking soda are gone.

8. Virus Scan While You Sleep.

While you are sleeping is a great time to let your anti- virus software scan your computer. This is also an excellent time to de-frag your hard drive. The de-frag works most efficiently when you aren't doing something else on the computer.

Banish Clutter Once and For All

Banish Clutter Once and For All

It's not every day that I recommend organizing books from authors other than myself. But, when something really good comes along--something that I feel supplements my books and products beautifully, I'd feel I was doing you a disservice not to tell you about it.

Mimi Tanner, the author of 'Declutter Fast' is actually a reformed pack rat. That's right...she has struggled with mountains of clutter for years.

But today, she is free. She has discovered the joys of order and organization.

She focuses on getting rid of clutter, and she does a wonderful job at it.

Mimi makes decluttering your house both quick and pain free. I'm inspired by her excellent methods. I'm sure you will be too.

Christmas without the Chaos

With the ever expanding commercialization of the Christmas holiday, the majority our organizing efforts during the month of December are focused on presents. How long is your list? The majority of us, each year, face the daunting task of not only shopping for a long list of family and friends, but also determining who should be on said list, how to wrap and store appropriately, how much to spend, potentially shipping gifts to different regions or countries and any number of tasks that threaten to overwhelm us.

Below are some tips and tricks intended to help keep you stress-free during Christmas by organizing your list and your spending.

1) Shopping list creation

Create your gift list as soon as possible. Write down names of every person for whom you intend to purchase a gift in a spreadsheet. As you generate names you will probably discover that the list is much longer than you anticipated. Don't forget to brainstorm for those unexpected small gifts: a box of candy for the mail carrier, a plate of cookies for the administrative assistant and a gift card for the paperboy or girl. Create additional columns labeled 'gift ideas,' 'budgeted amount,' 'actual amount,' 'items purchased,' 'purchase deadline,' and, if appropriate, 'shipping deadline.'

Large amounts of holiday stress come from failure to budget for gifts ahead of time. By creating columns on your spreadsheet, you'll start to realize where your holiday dollars are being spent and be able to stop inadvertently buying too many presents for your special niece, nephew or grandchild. Do you give a calendar or special framed photo to several individuals in the family? Don't neglect to include it on your list. Little things like frames or printing costs can add up quickly and you'll want to account for them as you create your budget.

2) Shopping list completion

This is the fun part! Go shopping for all those great gift ideas that you generated on your spreadsheet. Take a look around the webpage of the stores you plan to visit before going into the store. This will give you a chance to see if free shipping is being offered or if there are special online sales that will give you a better deal than what you would find in the store. Most stores also publish their sale flyers in advance, so you can take note of any items you are planning to purchase that will be on sale in the next few days. By waiting to make your purchase, you may save one or two dollars and, as you probably already know, every dollar counts in December!

As you make purchases keep a small wallet or pouch handy for the receipts. When you receive the receipt from the clerk take the extra few seconds to write the name of the person on the back of the receipt, so you'll be able to insert gift receipts in the appropriate packages later.

Finally, after each shopping experience, whether online or in-store, log your purchases on your shopping list spreadsheet.

3) Shopping storage and wrapping organization

Pick a space in your home that is off-limits to everyone else and make it your own 'Wrapping Central;' a home office or a corner in the basement are great options. Gather your essential supplies: tape, scissors, wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, shirt boxes, bows, to/from tags, etc. As you wrap gifts, create labeled boxes or areas to ensure nothing is left behind. All presents for the in-laws' party go in one stack, everything going to the office in another.

Check back with your spreadsheet to remember which presents are being shipped and which are being delivered in person. Wrapped gifts are much easier to package than bagged gifts, so plan accordingly. The US Postal Service also offers flat- rate boxes at all of their locations or delivered directly to you by your mail carrier. By having your shipping boxes on hand, you can pack as you wrap and then pay for postage online as soon as the package is ready to go--removing the extra trip to the post office or shipping store later in the month.

4) Distribution

It may look great on a Hollywood screen, but a car trunk filled with loose presents is anything but picturesque as you try to get them all unloaded at Grandma's house. Take stock of how many gifts will be going to any given location and then choose a storage tub or laundry basket of appropriate size to contain all the packages together.

Once the presents have been placed beneath the tree, take the container back to the trunk to avoid cluttering the hosts' house, retrieve it again at the end of the celebration to contain all the received gifts that need to make their way back to your house.

If shipping presents, consider shipping them directly from an online retailer. Many retailers offer gift-wrapping for a small fee. Though it may seem like $6 is a lot to pay for wrapping paper, it may end up being cheaper than the cost of shipping it to your home, wrapping it yourself and then shipping it to the recipient.

5) Etcetera and Miscellany

Undoubtedly there will be some new acquaintance that will purchase a gift for you unexpectedly. Be sure to account for these experiences by adding a couple extra 'unnamed' lines to your spreadsheet. They may not have names, but they should have a budget!

While you're out shopping, don't forget to pick up a couple of interchangeable gifts for those 'unnamed' lines on your spreadsheet. A set of coasters or a bottle of wine are usually great options when you don't know for whom you are buying.

One other item to consider including on your spreadsheet would be any cards or letter you plan to send for the holidays. If printing pictures or purchasing cards, your budget could dramatically shift after you account for the costs of those items and the postage necessary to mail them.

Organize Those Mountains of Paper Once and For All

    Organize Those Mountains of Paper
    Once and For All

So many people have spoken of the so-called paperless society. There's no doubt that the world hasn't caught on to this concept yet.

There's more paper than ever... bank statements, insurance paperwork, schedules, school-related reports, medical records, warranties-- and of course all the fun paper too, like memorabilia, articles, hobby-related stuff and more. This is not to mention all the email messages and computer documents that get printed and copied each day--even more paper!

These papers start small, quickly turn into piles, and then grow into mountains. Sometimes, these mountains of paper get so high, that the thought of tackling them is just too overwhelming-- especially when you don't have a good filing system in place or much time to put one together.

If you're sick and tired of the piles of paper taking over your home and your life and you just don't know where to start, I have a solution for you. The good news is, this solution will take no time at all, and the result will be stunning--a filing system that will allow you to dismantle those mountains and find whatever you're looking for in seconds. Visit:

    http://www.getorganizednow.com/filing.html

P.S. I guarantee you'll be able to get all your paper organized, in an efficient, easy-as-pie to set up filing system that will be the envy of all your friends.

Here's what just one customer had to say ...

I wanted to thank you for putting together My Oh-So- Organized Filing System. It is such a simple idea, but worth every penny. I put your system to work immediately, and you should see my filing drawer--it's beautiful! I could not have achieved the level of success without your completely thought out system. It's wonderful. Everything is filed away and neat and organized. I can find anything. I showed my husband and he was so impressed, he was telling the neighbors! Excellent product--I highly recommend it!
    --Jennifer Thoden, Drapery Sewing Supplies

A Handful of Fun and Creative Organizing Makeovers

Most people say the words, 'I have to get Organized' with a tone of complete drudgery in their voice. It's viewed as a chore or something that needs to be tackled and fought through. Believe it or not, organizing can be fun!

Being organized is about being able to find and use the things that you do have, rather than just having to get rid of things. Another fallacy about organizing is that it's just about having pretty, matching containers to put all of your stuff into.

That's not the case at all, but you know what? It sure can be soothing and make you happy when things do in fact match, look good together and are attractive.

It's not a requirement that you go out and spend a lot of money for things to be visually appealing and efficient. There have never been more organizing shows, magazines and books out there on the market than there are now which give you an unlimited source of ideas. Just because you see something in a magazine or store, it doesn't mean that you have to buy that exact product. There are tons of creative alternatives.

    1) Paint Cans: Rather than spending lots of money on round containers meant specifically for organizing, go to your local hardware store and buy empty metal paint cans. You can then decorate them using any number of techniques from stickers, to paint pens to hot gluing little items on the sides. You can use the paint pens to make 'labels' on the cans to indicate what each one holds. Cans like this have an unlimited array of uses. They can be as colorful and crazy or as simple and sleek as you want to make them. These are especially fun for kid's rooms.

    2) Shoe Boxes: Another great option for fun, easy and reasonable kid's storage is to decorate shoe boxes. You can make it a fun project to do with your children. If they are involved with creating the boxes, chances are they will be more interested in using them. You can cover the boxes with contac-type paper which will not only be long-lasting but will help to reinforce the boxes as well. From there, the possibilities are endless. Don't have kids? That's OK, because this idea works for kids AND adults alike!

    3) Colored Containers: Having trouble locating the Christmas or other winter holiday decorations among all of the brown cardboard boxes in your attic or basement? Not sure which one holds your scary Halloween witch or Jack O'Lantern? Right after each holiday, brightly colored storage boxes colored appropriately for the holiday are available for a small percentage of their original cost. You will save yourself tons of time, effort and energy by being able to see immediately where the Christmas boxes are, for example, by locating the bright red and green boxes.

    4) Clear Jars: Tired of a packed, cluttered pantry where you're always struggling to find things? Clear jars, either glass or plastic, in various sizes will turn any pantry from drab to fab! Everything from rice to sugar, flour, chocolate chips, salt, and all of your dry goods can be stored this way. With one glance, you will be able to see where everything is and even better, how much is left. No chance that you'll reach for a box of something you need and be unpleasantly surprised when there's only a tiny drop left.

    5) Containerize: Does your bathroom look like a drugstore? Is it filled to the brim with cosmetics, medications, hair supplies and other miscellaneous debris? Containerize! In the short time it will take you to sort things into like categories, you can have a relaxing, orderly place. One box for nail stuff, one box for cosmetics, one box for hair accessories and so on. With the incredible selections out there these days, you'll be able to find something that will compliment your bathroom decor and still allow you to have everything within reach.

    6) Nice Hangers: Turn your closet into a boutique! With one super easy and fairly inexpensive trick, you can make your closet look like your favorite upscale store. Change out all of your hangers for matching wooden hangers. What was once expensive is now reasonable. Many of the big stores sell large packages of them at a great price. Another option is to do half matching wooden hangers and half of the satin covered puffy ones that are gentler on your delicates. It's amazing what a big difference this will make in your closet's appearance and functionality. It will also give you a chance to sort through what you have in your closet and have to wear.

While you're at it, turn all of your hangers in the opposite direction from the normal way you would hang them. When you wear an item, turn it back the usual way and then you will have concrete evidence of exactly which clothes you're actually wearing.

    Say Good-bye to Clutter

    Say Good-bye to Clutter

Yes, clutter looks like a big mess, but it's so much more than that.

Clutter prevents you from getting things done. Clutter causes precious wasted hours in your day. Clutter gives others a less favorable impression of you. Clutter causes stress within yourself and your family. Clutter prevents goals and dreams from being attained.

Clutter can have such a negative effect on one's life. I know, after years of experience of helping others, that when you get rid of your clutter, you've just cleared the path to a more wonderful life.

My goal of the day is to help you do 2 things--to tell you about a great way to tackle your clutter AND to motivate you and inspire you.

First, know that even though clutter is one of life's challenges, it can be conquered. It doesn't matter if you have years of clutter or no experience with getting rid of it.

There's a light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to start walking towards it.

Now, I have tons of organizing information in my own books, and of course, I highly recommend you get them to help you get rid of clutter, find super storage solutions, manage your time, and more.

BUT, there's one other book that I feel very comfortable recommending--and it's not often that I recommend other organizing books.

    Frosted Reindeer Cookies

     INGREDIENTS
1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated sugar cookies
    ¼ cup all-purpose flour
    1 cup vanilla ready-to-spread frosting
    64 small pretzel twists
64 semisweet chocolate chips (about 1/4 cup)
    16 gumdrops, cut in half
    DIRECTIONS
    • 1Heat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, break up cookie dough; work flour into dough until well blended. Shape roll of cookie dough into triangle-shaped log. (If dough is too soft to cut, place in freezer 30 minutes.)
    • 2With thin sharp knife, cut dough into 32 (1/4-inch-thick) triangular slices; place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
    • 3Bake 7 to 11 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 15 minutes.
    • 4Frost cookies with frosting. Place 2 pretzel twists on each triangle near corners for antlers. Lightly press 2 chocolate chips into each cookie for eyes and 1 halved gumdrop for nose. Store between sheets of waxed paper in tightly covered container.
Try Create ‘n Bake™ gingerbread cookies for a whole different flavor reindeer.

I got this for a great friend and thanks Denice Duszynski
